Kuo-Shin Chuang Pangcah Dance Theatre is founded in 2005 by art director and choreographer Kuo-Shin Chuang, Pangcah people of Tafalong community in Hualien County. Currently enrolled as a Ph.D. student in the School of Dance at Taipei National University of the Arts, studying the education and creation of traditional indigenous song and dance based on traditional indigenous song and dance, interpreting the contemporary spirit of indigenous song and dance. Chuang is also a teacher at Hualien Beipu Primary School and has been dedicated to his resource-deficient hometown as a song and dance instructor for two decades, coaching and helping the younger generation to establish a positive philosophy towards life through traditional dance.
The dance theatre currently has over twenty dancers who have been dancing with Chuang since their young age, trained in traditional indigenous song and dance for rituals and ceremonies, as well as physical training for modern theatre. Dancers return regularly to Hualien every month for rehearsals and trainings despite studying or working away from Hualien, and their experiences of migrating between cities are the most critical physical manifestation of the dance project 038.
