I Had A Dream

Before we traveled to Jemeri, Jeff(Jeffrey Lim) told me he had purposely chosen a tribe alongside the river to respond my Pangcah heritage, because I also came from a community close to rivers. Thus we attempt to get familiar with local inhabitants in this place and learn from the river in the very beginning. This research process is kind like we are chasing rivers.

The first night when we arrived Jemeri, I had this dream.  In my dream, I was wandering in a forest near the river. Suddenly there was a black insect crawling into my body from my foot. I was panic trying to get rid of it, but it kept crawling to me. I began screaming hysterically, scratching my skin and slapping my body to get it away.

We slept all together in a traditional bamboo house. My scream woke Jeff up. He saw me flapping myself as if I was trying to drive something away. How could I visit the river here when I was so afraid of any little inset even it was just a dream?

We Followed this river, which had many different names as time passed. Humans come and go, legends and stories left forever. There are so many stories I simply can't understand at all. It feels the same that sometime I don't understand my own culture and land stories. At this moment, I can only feel my absence.

The elder Dopi, who explained when he was drawing the map in Jemeri, has brought us around many places.  Wherever we went, he would always talk to the air. He said he was telling to his ancestors that we are new here.

In my last few days in Jemeri, I had an allergic reaction. I couldn’t stop sneezing and felt dizzy when I was filming. Again, I woke up at midnight feeling the pain of my swollen lip at the last night. There were no more medicines with us, so I went back to sleep. Half-dream and half-awake, I recalled the elders told me to wet my hands, face, and body with some water from the same river before boarding the boat the other day. "Then the god of river knew who you are." they said. It seemed I forgot to do so while I was busy on filming and preventing camera from dropping down the river.

On our journey along the river, Jeffrey asked me or people he met : “Do you have boats?” or “What’s your ship-building method? In fact, I didn't knew, yet eager to know whether there are boats in my culture. Sometimes, I would think of the myth of our ancestor’s origin and imagine what kind of boat our ancestors took to escape the flood. When Dobi was drawing the map of the river slowly with his pen --- the expression on his face was as if he was riding a canoe by himself, visioning his sails in every river channel he knew --- What would the voyage in his mind look like?

Lakec’s project is intertwined with the dialogue, doubts, and questions between the people, things, matters, and places I have encountered. Sometimes they reappear as the errors and lost in the translation. Sometimes, they are words and taboos muttered in the air or to the trees by the people of Jemeri. I can only approach and understand from my limited position. At the end of the journey, it occurred to me that the cifar made of betel nut sheath is a food container that Fata'an people have known of since childhood -- the word cifar also means boat/ship.
