It is the 3rd Pulima Art Festival this year. As young as it is, it plays a very important role for the development of contemporary indigenous art in Taiwan. The preparatory committee of Pulima Art Festival pays close attention to the inter-reaction between tradition and contemporary. There is a core, an origin of all creations and in which one’s heritage would be found. The theme of Pulima Art Festival this year is ‘o loma no adingo’, meaning home, where the spirits dwell. By that, we encourage creators to reflect their personal connection with their own culture, also to explore ‘the future of the tradition’ as well as ‘the tradition in the future’ through their works.
Aside from the programs from home, it also marks the first time for the festival having international indigenous performances. They are Atamira Dance Company, a Maori modern dance group; Black Grace from New Zealand which co-presents ‘2 Gather’ with local indigenous dance company Tjimur Dance Theatre; and B2M, a promising band from Australia. ‘2 Gather’ is the very first international dance co-production presented by Pulima Art Festival and Taipei Arts Festival. We hope to open the possibilities of innovation via this kind of collaboration in art.
Pulima Art Festival hosts an indigenous new talent selection this year and picks 8 promising young artists in performing arts to encourage the new generation to backtrack their heritage from their own life experience. This is an important tryout. Because we believe that culture wouldn’t be continued if art turned its back on its nature and stopped having dialogue with audiences.
Starting from November 5, a series of exhibitions, music/theatre/dance programs and academic forums await the audience. New talent will be presnted and a lot of cross-national exchanges will be expected as well.
